Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of over 120 identified cannabinoids found in the Cannabis Sativa plant.
Much of the attention in recent years in the scientific community has been largely focused on the therapeutic benefits of popular cannabinoids such as CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC.
However, CBG is another safe, non-toxc, non-psychoactive cannabinoid which may possess a range of biological activities including anti-bacterial activity, neuroprotective and even potentially anti-tumor effects.
Cannabigerol (CBG) serves as the precursor molecule for the most abundant phytocannabinoids and is often referred to as “the mother of all cannabinoids”.
CBG is a minor constituent of the Cannabis Sativa plant present in very low amounts of less than 10% of the cannabinoid fraction.
CBG is potentially unique compared to other cannabinoids due to it’s interactions with α-2 adrenoceptors and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT1A). [1]
Here are five Cannabigerol (CBG) benefits backed by the science.
CBG Health Benefits
1. Anti-Bacterial Properties
Research has discovered that certain cannabinoids exert anti-microbial activity against gram-positive bacteria.
One of these is Cannabigerol (CBG), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid which has shown anti-bacterial effect against the likes of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), the most common pathogen associated with tooth caries. [2]
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a potent antibacterial, antibiofilm, and antipersister cannabinoid.
Studies have also found CBG to exhibit antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
The mechanisms of action of CBG is thought to be by inhibiting its ability to form biofilms, eradicating preformed biofilms and stationary phase cells persistent to antibiotics. [3]
2. Anti-Tumor Effects
The interest in cannabinoids such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) as potential adjunct cancer therapies continues to grow.
Recently Cannabigerol (CBG) has shown anti-tumor properties in certain carcinomas such as colorectal cancer (CRC), breast cancer and glioblastoma.
Cannabigerol, O-1602, and URB-602 demonstrated a high capacity for tumor volume reduction.
Induction of apoptosis, interaction with cell survival, growth pathways, and angiogenesis inhibition were the mechanisms extracted from the studies that explain cannabinoids’ actions on CRC. [4]
3. Neuroprotective & Neuroinflammation
Cannabigerol (CBG) has shown potential neuroprotective properties in experimental models of neurological disease.
Safe, non-psychoactive, neuroprotective Cannabinoids such as CBG may potentially be of significant benefit in the treatment of neurological disorders such as (Huntington disease, Parkinson disease, and multiple sclerosis).
Recently our group conducted a systematic review focusing on the neuroprotective properties of minor phytocannabinoids (other than Δ9-THC or CBD) and found that CBG and CBDV show efficacy in models of Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and epilepsy, with CBG mediating its protective effects through PPAR-γ activation, the same mechanism by which we have shown that CBD protects BBB integrity.
The study also found that: CBG and CBDV were protective against OG mediated injury in three different cells that constitute the BBB, modulating different hallmarks of ischemic stroke pathophysiology. [8]
CBG is thought to exert its neuroprotective effect through numerous different mechanisms such as attenuating the reactive microgliosis, the upregulation of inflammatory markers/reducing (IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ) and improving antioxidant defenses.
4. Appetite Stimulant
The appetite-stimulating properties of the Cannabis Sativa plant are well documented and research has found that Cannabis extracts devoid of THC still stimulate appetite, indicating that other cannabinoids or compounds can also elicit hyperphagia.
CBG is currently being studied for its appetite boosting properties and animal studies in rats have found that:
CBG elicits hyperphagia, by reducing latency to feed and increasing meal frequency, without producing negative neuromotor side effects. [10]
5. Analgesic & Pain Relief
Some studies have described Cananbigerol (CBG) as having stronger analgesic and pain relieving effect than the popular cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Much like CBD (Cannabidiol), Cannabigerol may be another promising non-psychoactive cannabinoid for the management of difficult to treat and chronic pain disorders.
Furthermore, CBG has more potent analgesic, anti-erythema and lipooxygenase blocking activity than THC. [11]
